With This Weather, Enjoy an Iced Coffee

By J. Martinez

With This Weather, Enjoy an Iced Coffee - The summer days are hot, hot, hot. And the humidity only makes things worse. Iced coffee made with a gourmet specialty coffee is one way to find relief from these unrelenting scorching days. Rich and flavorful coffee combined with ice to create a cold beverage can help one endure the steamiest of days.

Though it may seem daunting, this cold version of the morning favorite is simple to make and is a wonderful pick-me-up on any hot day. It can bring out some of the more subtle flavors in your favorite gourmet coffees. The method of making this tasty beverage can vary, depending on your preferences and time.

Hot Brewed Iced Coffee
Hot brewing is a common method of creating this refreshing and delicious beverage. After brewing your favorite roast, allow your drink to slightly cool. The coffee should then be dispensed over ice. To combine the two properly, you would need to use a pour-over cone, such as a Chemex or Clever dripper. Because the coffee is poured directly over ice, which will melt once the warm liquid comes in contact with the cold ice, the initial brew should be much stronger than usual. This method retains the delicate flavors and aromatics of the gourmet specialty coffee of your choice, making the taste truer to the hot version of this beverage.

Cold Brewed Iced Coffee
Cold brewing takes a bit more planning, but can have excellent results. To cold brew, choose your gourmet specialty coffee. Some connoisseurs have been known to even add a bit of chicory to give the drink that "New Orleans Flavor." In a container, add about three-fourths of a cup of your chosen coffee to every pint of water. After covering, let the mixture sit for at least 12 hours to brew. The mixture should then be strained to remove all coffee grinds. Once filtered, the result can be diluted with cold water to taste. It can even be added baked goods or infused in cocktails. This method decreases the acidity in the coffee to give a mellow, naturally sweet flavor.

Whichever method you choose to use, you can create an iced coffee that excites your palate. Experiment with different types, such as Kona coffee from Hawaii, Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee or any other of the amazing estate coffees. You can also add sweetener, cream, or flavorings to make the drink your own. When the temperature climbs, kick back and cool off with a refreshing glass of iced coffee.
